This week we will be going again to the kalo farm to practice the techniques of farming and so that we can make the techniques concrete and so we can create our own farm possibly in our homes. Me and Kainoa have learned so much from him already and hope to learn more every time we go. Kainoa has already begun to create his own setup in his backyard and is trying to live sustainable.
I will be going to his house and learning how to start cultivating the land and learning how to live like our ancestors. I believe that by doing this I can learn and find the meaning of what it is to be Hawaiian and how to be kanaka maoli. I hope that by doing this I can learn more about my culture and learn more about who I want to be and what I want to do with my life. This week we will be visiting again and try to learn more about what it is he does for the community. We are learning a lot about what it means to be kanaka and how to make the kalo thrive. We are learning more traditionals ways on how to make the loʻi by using modern tools and reasources. Going to the farm made me appreciate and realize how hard these farmers work to make the kalo.
Going to the farm showed me how the ancient Hawaiians diverted the water from a stream in order to create a natural watering system for plants that need a lot of water. The kalo farm gives back to the community bu physically giveing out food grown by them. The farm produces kalo, kulolo, paʻi ʻai, laulau, and other products. Some struggles that we are having is planning a day to go to the kalo because our schedules are restricting due to sports and other activities going on outside of school. We are finding holes in our schedules to go to the kalo farm so, things are working out.
We have had some trouble also getting transportation to the loʻi so that has made it hard to find a date to get there. Also finding time to work and research in order to fulfill the agreements that we promised in our Kahiau application. Collaborating with a kalo farm for the projects is only helping us absorb the maximum amount of knowledge. We will connect with the owner of the kalo farm to learn more about the farm and discuss when we will come and work at his farm. We have chose this farm because we have a connection because our family is from kahaluʻu and we also connect because we know him personally. We have already started to make plans as to how we will accomplish these things.
We are planning on going to the kalo farm to learn more about what makes it different than the others and what he does to benefit the community. We are also reasearching and learning about the kalo farm to better understand what exactly we are getting in to. In our research we are finding that this is a good project and a good place to do our project.
We are researching and learning about the kalo farm to better understand what exactly we are getting into. in our research we are finding that this is a good project because itʻs unique and no one else is doing something like this. |
